Passion is Her Middle Name

I’m pleased to host Emma Calin on my blog today. One of my favourite authors, Emma writes intriguing police novels laced with so much passion that you won’t be able to put the book down.

Today, Emma Calin announces the release of the third novel in her ‘Passion Patrol’ series: ‘LOVE BLEEDS BLUE’.

Firmly in the ‘suspense romance’ genre,  this story features another sassy female hero-cop who is as passionate about her job as she is about the love in her life. Each Passion Patrol novel can be read as a stand-alone story; characters from previous stories make cameo appearances across the series.

She blogs about her dual life in St-Savinien sur Charente, South West France and Romsey, a market town in England. Shannon's Law 1MB

Turning Point – Excerpt from Shannon’s Law by Emma Calin

Of course they traveled at the front of the cabin on wide leather seats. She relaxed and watched him working seriously on his laptop. This was a business trip after all. The absence of chatter somehow allowed a wordless blanket to wrap around them. As they walked from the plane an Italian official greeted them. They bypassed all customs and immigration  checks as he showed the way to a waiting burnished motor launch. A couple of minutes later a bowing porter delivered their luggage and they set out across the still lagoon. The sky was white through to midnight blue and turning to rose. The sun brushed its last kiss before fleeing from the night. The scent was of the sea, summer heat, and humanity. The view ahead was a picture postcard. Slowly the Campanile grew larger as the onion-domed roof of the Cathedral of San Marco formed a silhouette against the hot pink sky.

She realized how little they’d spoken. They’d held hands, smiled, and let the presence of the other speak for itself. It was a quietness that was hard to kick-start into life. It had become a pause that had become a question. There was a depth in their simple presence together which their first new words mustn’t trivialize. Shannon knew that these coming words mustn’t fill their moment with chatter. She saw him  look at her seriously several times as they sat in the back of the speeding launch. However they moved on from here would set the agenda of her life. She was sure of that. So far they had run headlong like playing children along a corridor towards a door which would either open, or not. They paused breathless and silent looking at each other. They were about to try the handle.

The launch slowed as they neared land. He stood and drew her up beside him. Now the shapes of the buildings of Venice were overpowering against the twilight. He tilted up her chin and kissed her with a soft urgency that left her breathless.

“Such beauty, and the view’s not bad,” he said.

Her mood lifted a little as they kissed again. Other vessels and gondolas were close by. His words had awoken her but had left a void longing to be filled.

“It doesn’t seem real, this city and being here with you.”

“You’re real enough. I don’t have the talent to dream you up.”

“Spencer….” she began, not knowing how she was going to continue.

“This is Venice, Shannon. I have no obligations or rule book here….”

He was fencing and probing. There was no need to crowd him. She studied his strong, handsome face. He was one man with one woman. The world could make whatever it would of the rest of their story. It would never be more or less than that. They were  passing La Piazza San Marco and heading up into the wide mouth of the Grand Canal. Ahead was the fabulous church of Santa Maria Della Salute. They both  stared into the dusk. The navigation  lights of vessels were bright. A bridge spanned the canal ahead of them. She thought to ask its name but let it slide over their heads into the darkness. His arm was firm around her shoulders. She softened into him, willing him to understand his own strength through this metaphor of body against body.  She closed her eyes. His voice came deep from his chest.

“I love you,” he said.

The evening of Venice sighed and surrendered into the arms of night. The weight of all the words unsaid lifted from her heart and she was free.

“I love you,” she answered.

“Do you? Do you really? I’d been so afraid to say—in case you ran from some fool.”

“I’ve loved you since we sat by the lake.”

“Yes, that was it for me too.”

“So we’re both fools not to know that such a thing could happen,” she said. “I’ve been fighting it because I couldn’t believe anyone else was as crazy as me.”

The door had opened and they had charged headlong into a new space. She hugged his waist as his arms folded her in to him. Her mind raced ahead. What was the destination of this love?

“Before I said it, it was the most difficult thing on earth to say. Now I’ve let it out, it’s the only thing I can say,” he said.

“If I love you then it’s total, my hugga-bear. There’s no way back from love or murder. The jealous beast is out.”

“Jealous of a man like me?” he said smiling.

“Grrrrrr,” she replied.

“I wouldn’t want any other kind of love.”

“There is no other kind of love,” she said.

They were at the Rialto Bridge. They clung together in a kiss, oblivious of its magnificence. The launch had cut its engine and was coasting. There were only their words.

“My man.”

“My woman.”

Passion Patrol Series – Shannon’s Law

Thank you so much for letting me showcase my forthcoming steamy action-romance novel SHANNON’S LAW. It’s  the second in my PASSION PATROL series – stories where sassy female cops lock up the criminals and always get their man.

Photo A Shannon's Law Tour - print and digital

February marks the start of my “Pinterest Reveal Virtual Book Tour” in the run-up to the launch on the 28th February 2014.

Every day there are feature posts on topics relating to SHANNON’S LAW on blogs all around the world.  They’re all linked together on one big Pinterest Board. Each post replaces a ‘mystery’ silhouette that was posted in January. I saved all  my notes and photos as I was writing, on a private Pinterest Board and now I can share them with you.

Today’s subject is:  The Food of Love – Cop’s Kitchen – a companion recipe book to Shannon’s Law – Devils on Horseback

All-action all-loving cops need fuel. In the course of Shannon’s Law she and others chomp their way through a fair bit of food.  As I was writing it occurred to me that readers might like to experience some of the dishes for themselves. So it was that Cop’s Kitchen came into being. Where a dish is mentioned I have created a recipe.  All the food has been tried out  at home. Now you can too. The color photos are all my own work as well.  As a special treat during the run-up to launch of Shannon’s Law –  every reader who enters the Rafflecopter Draw below gets a FREE digital  copy of Cop’s Kitchen!

Shannon is a working girl. Between love and crime action she often has little time to consider her diet let alone slave at the stove or go shopping for herbs and spices.  As a true English girl she is well acquainted with take-out fish and chips. She has a favorite curry house to beat anything she could make. Although she buys some dishes ready made, I have recreated the real thing in my own way, using traditional methods. Very often it is the police canteen that keeps her fueled up for drama and passion. My ex-cop partner appears to have spent a lot of his career sustained by a famous police dish – Sausage Toad with chips. In the book, Shannon has an important meeting with her boss over such a feast.

Excerpt:

“Now, that’s what I call true Force feeding!” he said.

Shannon laughed and treated the delicacy with brown HP sauce. She missed stuff like this in her new life. Her hips were cheering. They sat down by the window looking out onto the urban swirl of cars and Croydon concrete.

A recipe from Cop’s Kitchen to whet your appetite: Devils on Horseback

These little dainties are served as one of a selection of canapé appetizers at a reception at Bloxington Manor after a cricket match.  They are the most unlikely combination but are utterly delicious blend of salt and sweet.  Traditionalists say to use prunes but I prefer unctuous dates – you could try either.  They are quite rich so if served with other appetizers you may only need 3-4 per person.

Shannon's Law Post 10 Photo devils on horseback

Ingredients to make 24:

8 rashers of bacon (streaky is best but back bacon will do.)

24 dates – pitted.

fresh sage leaves or dried if unavailable.

Olive oil.

wooden cocktail sticks.

Method:

  1. Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 6, 400 degF, 200degC.
  2. Using the blunt edge of a knife, carefully stretch each bacon slice to 1.5 times its length.
  3. Cut each rasher into 3.
  4. Take a date (or prune) and roll one slice of bacon around it.  Pin in place with a cocktail stick through the whole thing.
  5. Put some olive oil on a saucer and dip a sage leaf into the oil. (skip if using dried basil)
  6. Stick the sage leaf onto the ‘devil’.
  7. Place on a baking tray.
  8. If using dried sage, when all the devils are finished, sprinkle with olive oil and dried sage.
  9. Place in oven and cook for 10-12 minutes.
  10. Release with a metal slice and serve whilst warm.

Book Blurb

Shannon's Law 1MB

Wild child inner-city cop Shannon Aguerri walks a dangerous line between her methods and justice. When the bosses lose their nerve, after yet another maverick mission, she is transferred to green pastures to play out the role of a routine village cop. When she encounters signs of slave and drug trafficking she homes in on serious millionaire criminals.

As a loner she has attracted men but nothing has stuck. When she meets Spencer, the hunky and widowed Earl of Bloxington, there is an immediate rapport between them. Their social differences mean nothing to their passion and need.

Already in the mix is an upper class female rival – who has long plotted her way into the Earl’s bed. The jealousy is an evil shade of green and the anger is a violent scarlet.

Often inhibited by a sense of duty and honour, Spencer is slow to reveal his feelings. When Shannon confronts him with the need to choose between her word and that of her rival, he does not immediately support her.

All issues are set aside, when they are forced together to carry out a desperate rescue mission. Their love is stronger than everything ranged against them.

Love – What’s all the Fuss About?

Valentine’s Day is only two weeks away!EmmaCalinclose700kYou remember Emma Calin, author of those racy romances involving police passion. Well, she hasn’t been arrested yet for writing such hot stuff, so she is here to share some Valentine secrets.

What Emma says about love!

Love means feeling empty without that special snore beside you.

Here’s my true Valentine adventure:

I needed a job. A job with money. No one employs novelists. I became the moral equivalent of a street-walking loan shark. Yes, I was a secret shopper. For weeks I checked out frazzled fast food flippers with a secret stopwatch tucked into my underwear. I ate microwaved cow pats of pub grub burgers. I reported back to mission control. They rejected my prose and alliteration. They blocked my wages.

Then came the assignment. A night for two at a posh hotel on Valentine’s day. I set out with Oscar on our tandem. We were the only mud-spattered guests in multicolored Lycra. We tried to blend in. Secret shoppers are told to keep gray and low. OK – I was a failure.

The hotel was fabulous. We dined on salmon seduced into nets by singing virgins in mountain streams. We drank champagne made from grapes each kissed by bubbly cherubs.

At the end of the meal there was a competition to win a cute but anonymous teddy bear. The challenge was to provide the best name. Oscar the poet came up with “Rose-a-Welt”.  He won and we went to bed. The manager told us to keep the noise down since people were still eating.

I gave the hotel a seven star purple prose review. The agency blocked my wages for adding extra stars. It was my final mission. The teddy still sits on my bed and starred in my Valentine’s video. I’ve still got my poet.

About Emma Calin

EmmaCalinclose700k

Emma Calin was born in London in 1962. She currently lives in France and the UK.

She has been writing since childhood and has won numerous local, national and international prizes for poetry and short stories.

“Knockout!” is the first of the “Passion Patrol Series” a stand-alone love story set against a backdrop of international gambling corruption and deception. Interpol cop Anna Leyton finds herself torn between love and duty when her professional and private life intersects.  This book is now available in both paperback and Kindle formats.

“The Love in a Hopeless Place Collection” is a bargain anthology of 5 short stories and novelettes, available in paperback and digital formats.

“Sub-Prime” is a prize-winning hard hitting short story about courage, exploitation, and love. It is a raw and brutal exposé of life at the bottom in the aftermath of recession.

“The Chosen” is also a short story,  set in modern times where working people struggle to keep their dreams alive. A world where the promise of love motivates desperate measures.

“Escape To Love” is a ‘novelette’ (longer than a short story but shorter than a novella), a gritty urban romance with suspense and mystery but a love story at it’s core.

“Angela” a short story about a late-night taxi journey.

“Love in a Hopeless Place” a novelette about a middle-aged woman striving to find her true identity.

Emma Calin Blows her Horn

I’m quite moved to be on here. Anneli is a writer I admire and unbeknown to me, an element in her own writing followed very much one of the areas I address in my “Love In A Hopeless Place Collection.” I won’t tell you any more….you’ll have to read on.

Now, ever since I’ve been in this business I have been looking for unique features of my own work and persona to promote. Just maybe I am the only female social realist romance writer to be able to blow her own trumpet by actually playing her own trombone. Last Sunday I answered the bugle call of duty and helped out on the park bandstand. Come on Harper Collins et al – bring out your trombonists and do battle!

Click on this link. http://ow.ly/n2eMU  It will take  you to the blog where you’ll see the video of the band.

Emma at the Bandstand

And now to the book. Anneli’s blog is the first stop on my “Blowing my own Trombone Book Launch Blog Tour.” I have never tried to launch a story collection before. Short stories are strange animals – a bit like mules that have great strength but are enclosed within their lonely selves and cannot breed. I have always loved this format. In a way it is a look into somebody else’s critical life moment and a moving on back into your own life. Short stories are often described by scribes as a discipline. This is true, but they are also a freedom just to dip in for the good bits and dip out of the whole novel story arc. The “story” is the whole essence of fiction. I have always described fiction as a way of stealing the truth from the pocket of lies. Around the camp fires and the canteen tables, stories have been told. Most are lies. They deceive us into the truth of ourselves.

I may sound a bit serious and literary in these remarks. I am grateful to have the opportunity to say these things here because Anneli Purchase is a sincere writer of passion and truth who seeks integrity in her work. She has given me great assistance in proofreading and editing my work and whatever you think – YOU cannot spot your own mistakes! You know what you wanted to say and your brain fills in the BIG GAPING HOLES!!!

And here at last, is the cover of my “Love In a Hopeless Place Collection.”

LIAHP boxed set with border

These are realist “true life” tales from the less advantaged sector of society. Love grows like weeds in the cracks of time. But weeds are vital and savage. We know  they will always win in the end. Their anarchic victory confers upon us the structure of self discovery.

This ‘Love in a Hopeless Place Collection’ is launched tomorrow and available from Amazon worldwide.

Now, I am working on Romance because our dreams are as true as our hopes and reality. Our tomorrows are as possible as our dreams.  A lover’s arms are as strong as our power to reward, or not reward, with our yielding.

Oooh – I love it! I love it! I love LOVE!

Thanks for having me Anneli – and for your help and support.
